Remembering Dave Bruno
by: John Jankowski '80

Hockey is unlike any other sport.

It teaches competitiveness and makes one strive to be the best one can be. It also brings teammates closer in a way that few sports can.

When a teammate falls, the other teammates rally behind him and together they bond and fill the void. If one is hurt the rest show strength. And so does this carry over from the ice to everyday life.

I have known Dave Bruno since we were children, playing street hockey on Parkview Drive. Dave always strived to be the best and never settled for anything less. Even as a child, he always wanted to do his best and be the best. And so in life he carried these morals, too.

Dave was a gentleman -a man’s man- and an honest man who cared for his friends greatly. On the ice he played hard and gave his all. Even if he put a clean hit on an opponent, Dave was a person that was concerned if the other player was alright. It showed his true concerned for his fellow man be it “the other team” .

I never knew Dave to take advantage of anyone. He was truly concerned about everything he did and how he was perceived by others. Never have I known him to take the spotlight or the glory from someone else, nor brag of any of his good fortune, or turn anyone away who was in need. He played the game of hockey hard and respected everyone. He was a humble man. And such in life he carried himself in this manner.

It is a rare thing in life to have a friend that carried himself on the ice as in life. He is missed dearly and will always be remembered as one of our unequaled players on the ice as well as off.

Our hearts heavy, our eyes wiped dry. Your equipment and skates will hang quietly never to be used again. You have played your last game. The NC class of 1980 hockey team will never be the same without you...... Thank You for all the memories. .............. Jank

2011 Game Recap by Mike Kurliovitch

It was a simple message sent by Vinny Jowdy; that of a stiff shoulder into the breast bone of Scotty Dunn that stood Dunn up at the blueline and nearly provoked fisticuffs which told the assembled crowd that this Dick Nolan Classic was different.

Jowdy's message - Team Mossette was done losing to Team Newhouse.

And so it played out. Team Mossette ended a two year long losing streak as Steve Zafuto, 2012 MVP tallied twice for the White squad. Zafuto will wear the coveted Benny Critelli MVP Duffy jacket year round to celebrate his stellar play. Tallying also for White was John De Rubes and one of the Rose brother - either Jason or Joel - no one is exactly sure which one.

Scotty Dunn scored twice for Red, exposing White captain Brian Schiavi in a total undressing of the fiery captain on Dunn's first score.

The final: White 4 Red 2

Until next year....
