John DeRubes
Age: 46
Married: 22 years to Julie (Babcock)
Family: triplet boys 13 yrs old (Frank, Brian
and Sean)
Occupation: Director of Engineering for the
Fisher-Price Baby Gear Division
Residence: Grand Island, NY
DNC: When did you first start playing
hockey?
JD: “Pond hockey in the train yard behind my
house back around 1972. I only played one year
of organized hockey (in Bantams) before playing
for NC. Lucky for me, everyone made the team!”
DNC: Most vivid memories of playing
hockey at NC?
JD: “Scoring the winning goal late in the 3rd
period (against Trott?) in the Sertoma Cup
Tournament - it was definitely the highlight of
my 15 minute hockey career in high school.
Certainly my fondest memories were playing
hockey for Rich Nolan. I have a very short list
of people who greatly influenced my life during
those formidable high school years - Richie is
on that list.”
DNC: Do you still play the game today.
How often and why?
JD: “I play every week in the Tuesday night
men's league at Hyde Park and also play pick-up
hockey with the guys from work 2 or 3 times a
month. I also coach my son's Bantam team and I
build an ice rink in the back yard every year -
it's a labor of love. Why? There's no other
sport I'd rather be playing. It's even more fun
when you can play it with your kids.”
DNC: Favorite hockey player of all time?
JD: “Gilbert Perreault - I grew up watching Gil
do magic with the puck.”
DNC: Make, model and year of that bright
orange car you drove to high school?
JD: “1963 Plymouth Satellite - It was supposed
to be Fire Engine RED - but considering that I
painted it myself, it turned out more orange
than red.”
